CIWEM Certificate and Diploma Update, May 2007

From September 2007 CIWEM will cease to offer the CIWEM Certificate and Diploma to new students. However this will not affect current students.

Whatever point current students have reached with their course of study, they will have two more academic years (2007/08 and 2008/09) in which to complete either the Certificate or Diploma, or both. The academic year 2009/10 will provide a period of grace for exam re-takes only; it will not be possible to register for new modules that year.

The reason for this change is that CIWEM has decided to focus on the accreditation rather than the provision of courses in the future. Both the University of Bristol and Liverpool John Moore’s University will continue to offer their own MSc courses in Environmental Management.

CIWEM Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma

The course is in two Parts. Part I, the Certificate, provides a common platform of underpinning knowledge at post graduate certificate level in the basics of water and environmental management. Part II, the Diploma, provides specialist knowledge to post graduate diploma level in a range of carefully chosen options.

Part I comprises the following four compulsory modules for those wishing to qualify for the Certificate. Each module will normally require a total of 150 hours directed study over one academic year.

  • Environmental systems
Biomes and ecosystems; resource evaluation; human impact on the environment; integrated pollution control.
  • Environmental quality
Water quality; land quality; air quality.
  • Environmental policy and regulation
International and national environmental policy; European and UK environmental law; company environmental policy development.
  • Environmental management
Environmental assessment and environmental audit; environmental economics and sustainable development; environmental statistics.

Students may sit all the modules together, or one or more modules at a time. The Institution will only award the Certificate when all four modules have been completed.

Part II comprises a choice of four modules from the following topics for those wishing to qualify for the Diploma. In addition to successfully completing these modules those wishing to qualify for the Diploma must also have successfully completed the four compulsory Certificate modules.

Each module will normally require a total of 150 hours directed study over one academic year.

  • Conservation, Amenity and Recreation
  • Coastal Engineering and Shoreline Management
  • Industrial Environmental Management
  • Operational Management and Customer Service
  • Potable Water Distribution
  • Potable Water Treatment
  • River Engineering
  • Sustainable Water and Sanitation in Developing Countries
  • Waste and Land Management
  • Waste Water Treatment
  • Water Pollution Prevention and Control
  • Water Resources

Note, Diploma level modules are offered subject to sufficient demand.

The universities will charge their usual course fees and this will include the cost of taking the examinations and assignments for each module studied.

A registration fee of £90 + VAT is payable to CIWEM for each module to be taken. This should be paid in the first term of study - either by credit card by calling 020 7831 3110 or alternatively please forward a purchase order number to tom@ciwem.org to be invoiced.

In the event that the student has not paid course fees or the CIWEM module registration fees the award of the qualification will be withheld. Click here for important student information
