CIWEM represents thousands of environmental professionals in 97 countries. The Institution aims to educate and inform on all levels about issues of environmental concern. At present, we are involved in highlighting information around two issues:
The Value of Water
Water is central to our lives. In some parts of England and Wales it is an increasingly scarce resource, with certain areas described by Ofwat as ‘deficit resource zones’. Yet each day millions of gallons of water are wasted by domestic users in England and Wales and further millions of gallons are lost through leakage.
CIWEM’s campaign demands that water be given the same profile that energy is getting in policy and publicity terms. We are already seeing results in terms of policy statements and action from Government, but there is still a long way to go until the true value of water is realised. Take a look at our campaign recommendations, and find out how you can get involved.
Sustainable Communities
The UK Government is planning to build hundreds of thousands of new homes. Are those homes being planned and designed to ensure that future generations are not affected by a lack of attention to environmental concerns?
CIWEM has made recommendations on issues like water use, flood risk management and waste management. We are consulting with Government on the plans and are involved in raising awareness of key issues, including public involvement. What are your views? Can you take local action to ensure that sustainability is factored into development plans, or put your professional opinion and standing to good use by taking up the issue with people that matter?
